A few years ago anxiety used to feel like it was taking over my life—always humming, always present. It showed up in chest pain, racing thoughts, body shaking, dissociating, and sleepless nights. When therapy wasn’t helping and medication made me worst, I knew I needed to try something new but felt like I was running out of options. Overtime, I discovered that healing doesn’t come from just one thing—it comes from nurturing your mind, body, and nervous system in a thousand little ways.

Today, I’m sharing the exact things that helped me overcome anxiety and find my calm again. This is my personal journey, not a prescription—but I hope something here is helpful to you.

1. I Changed My Diet to Support My Nervous System

Once I learned how deeply food impacts mood and brain chemistry, I started eating with the intention of calming and stabilizing my body. I focused on:

  • Balancing blood sugar — no more skipping meals or riding the coffee-and-carb rollercoaster.
  • Eating healthy fats to support brain health.
  • Including magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, and dark chocolate.
  • Avoiding excessive caffeine, alcohol, and refined sugar, which spiked my anxiety.
  • Drinking calming teas like ginger , lemon balm, and chaga throughout the day.

Food became medicine, and my anxiety noticeably softened when I gave my body what it needed to feel safe and nourished.

2. I Practiced Breathing

Breathwork became my anchor. Whenever my thoughts were spinning or my heart was racing, I came back to my breath.

Simple practices that helped me:

  • Box breathing (inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4).
  • Extended exhales to activate the parasympathetic nervous system.
  • Morning breathwork sessions to ground myself before the day began.

Breathing gave me space. It reminded me I was in control—and that calm was always just a few breaths away.

3. I Started Taking Natural Supplements

With the help of a functional practitioner, I began taking supplements to support my brain and nervous system. These included:

  • Magnesium glycinate – for calming the body and supporting sleep.
  • Ashwagandha – an adaptogen that helped regulate my cortisol levels.
  • Omega-3s – to support brain health and reduce inflammation.

Supplements aren’t a cure-all, but they gave my body the support it needed while I rebuilt from within.

4. I Committed to Acupuncture for Nervous System Healing

Acupuncture was one of the most surprisingly powerful tools I used. After just a few sessions, I felt my nervous system begin to reset. I left each appointment feeling grounded, clear, and so much lighter.

It helped:

  • Regulate my stress hormones.
  • Improve my sleep.
  • Create a deep sense of safety in my body.

I now go regularly as part of my long-term emotional wellness care. I also will use an acupressure mat at home in between appointments.

5. I Did Neurofeedback to Rewire My Brain

Neurofeedback changed the game. This non-invasive therapy helped me train my brain to move out of fight-or-flight and into a state of calm. I did 16 sessions twice a week over 2 months.

Through regular sessions, I noticed:

  • Fewer intrusive thoughts.
  • Better focus and emotional regulation.
  • A general sense of peace I hadn’t felt in years.

A session was about 30 minutes and first I would get a cap with sensors placed on my scalp to measure my brainwaves. While watching a show the neurofeedback software responded to my brainwaves. If my brain started to drift into anxiety the screen would dim, pause, or the sound cut out. If my brain was calm and focused the show would play normally. It was like giving my brain new instructions and trained my mind to be calm.

6. I Grounded Myself in Nature (Literally)

Every day, I stepped outside and put my bare feet on the earth. Even just a few minutes of earthing helped me feel more present and regulated.

Grounding benefits:

  • Reduced inflammation and cortisol.
  • Improved sleep and mood.
  • A beautiful reminder that I am part of something bigger.

Sun on my face, feet on the earth, breath in my lungs—it was a full-body reminder that I am safe.

7. I Rewired My Thoughts with Gentle, Loving Affirmations

Anxiety often told me stories that weren’t true. So I started telling myself new ones.

Every morning, I repeated:

  • “I am safe in my body.”
  • “My mind is a calm and peaceful place.”
  • “I trust the timing of my life.”
  • “I choose peace, not fear.”

Over time, these affirmations became more than words—they became my truth.

Final Thoughts

Healing from anxiety wasn’t instant. And healing was not linear. It took time and alot of trial and error. But every small step I took—every meal, every breath, every affirmation—brought me closer to the grounded, joyful version of myself I had been craving.

If you’re navigating anxiety right now, know this: you’re not alone, and healing is possible. Your body wants to feel good. Your mind wants to be still. And with love, support, and a bit of softness, you will find your way back to you.
